Description
This terracotta is probably a portrait of Madame De Pompadour. There is a similar marble at the Louvre Museum (inv. nr. RFR 53) signed J.B. Pigalle 1759.
Our sculpture also bears a signature and dating on the back, namely “J.B. Pigalle” & “F. 1759”. However, it is a 19th century creation which means that the signature and dating are apocryphal. The creator of this sculpture was rather a follower who worked in the tradition of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785). The bust is of good quality and is represented with great attention to detail.
The hair is worked very finely, the draping is made very supple and her facial features are faithful to nature. The proportions are on point. The bust is supported by a brown onyx foot.
Second half of the 19th century
